"PROCESS FOR CONTROLLED N2O DECOMPOSITION IN AN N2O-CONTAINING GAS STREAM" ABSTRACT The exothermicity attending decomposition of N2O to nitrogen and oxygen can lead to a multiplicity of process difficulties associated with high process temperatures. The process of the invention solves three difficulties by cooling a portion of the exit gases depleted in N2O from the decomposition zone and then recycling at least a portion of the resulting cooled gas stream to the N2O- decomposition zone. The process is amenable to process control to afford a very stable process largely independent on the particular catalyst used for N2O decomposition. Where the N2O-containing waste gas stream also contains NOx, it is often highly desirable to pretreat the stream to remove NOx prior to the N2O- decomposition zone.
