In order to make breathing systems used in the treatment of sleep apnea more user friendly, the oscillatory pressure amplitude of a patient's breathing is measured continuously using oscillatory resistance measuring to determine the patient's respiratory resistance value, and, when the respiratory resistance value deviates from a base value determined at the start of therapy, gas is supplied under pressure to the patient until the base value is reached. Other parameters such as phase angle of the pressure amplitude of the patient's breathing and respiratory flow can be used to control the flow of gas to the patient.
