A process for controlling the cone tilt angle of a tilted smectic liquid crystal composition comprises the step of combining (a) at least one liquid crystal composition comprising at least one smectic or latent smectic liquid crystal compound comprising (i) an aliphatic fluorocarbon terminal portion comprising a terminal fluoroalkyl or fluoroether group and an alkylene group having at least two carbon atoms and containing at least one catenary ether oxygen atom, (ii) an aliphatic hydrocarbon terminal portion, and (iii) a central core connecting the terminal portions; and (b) at least one liquid crystal composition comprising at least one smectic or latent smectic liquid crystal compound; with the provisos that at least one of the compositions (a) and (b) comprises at least one chiral liquid crystal compound and that the combining of compositions (a) and (b) provides an optically active, tilted chiral smectic liquid crystal composition. The process enables control of cone tilt angle and thereby control of the brightness characteristics of liquid crystal display devices.

La présente invention concerne un procédé de commande de l'angle d'inclinaison des cônes dans une composition de cristaux liquides smectiques inclinés. Ce procédé comprend l'opération consistant à combiner (a) au moins une composition de cristaux liquides comprenant au moins un composé de cristaux liquides smectiques ou smectique latents, qui comprend (1) une partie terminale de fluorocarbone aliphatique comprenant un groupe terminal fluoroalkyle ou fluoroéther et un groupe alkylène présentant au moins deux atomes de carbone et contenant au moins un atome d'oxygène d'éther en chaîne, (2) une partie terminale d'hydrocarbure aliphatique et (3) un noyau central reliant les parties terminales; et (b) au moins une composition de cristaux liquides comprenant au moins un composé de cristaux liquides smectiques ou smectiques latents, avec les conditions qu'au moins l'une des compositions (a) et (b) comprenne au moins un composé de cristaux liquides chiraux et que la combinaison des compositions (a) et (b) donne une composition de cristaux liquides smectiques chiraux inclinés, active sur le plan optique. Le procédé selon l'invention permet de commander l'angle d'inclinaison des cônes et donc les caractéristiques de luminosité des dispositifs d'affichage à cristaux liquides.
