O.Z. 4521 Abstract: Process for controlling the particle size of expandable styrene polymers by suspension polymerisation A process for controlling the particle size of polymers based on styrene and optionally copolymerisable monomers by suspension polymerisation is described. At least 70%, based on the total amount of monomers used, of the monomers are initially polymerised in aqueous suspension in the presence of a dispersant, an initiator and other additives to a conversion of at least 70% by weight, and the residual amount of monomer is then metered in within 1 to 3 hours. The polymers thus prepared exhibit the desired increase in particle size and have low internal water contents. They are preferably used as insulating material.
