ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for converting coals, peat or wood to hydro- carbon values, by intimately contacting coals such as lignite coal with a reagent, characterized by the use of an alkali metal sulfide or polysulfide or an alkali metal hydrosulfide, or mixtures of these, and a combination of steam and hydrogen sulfide; at certain conditions the con- version reaction is exothermic; coating of coal with a reagent also improves the conversion reaction.
