A method is provided for efficient processing of blends of low rank coals and asphaltenic fractions separated from bitumen/heavy oil by any deasphalting technology or residues (vacuum bottoms) generated by atmospheric and vacuum distillations of bitumen and/or heavy oil. The method includes the steps of crushing and homogenizing the blends of coals/asphaltenic fractions, thermally treating (co-processing) so prepared blends at 420-460°C, at ambient pressure and in inert atmosphere followed by collecting the distillable oil product, quality solid fuel and generated gases.
