Process for hydrocracking residual hydrocarbon oils, which process comprises contacting a residual hydrocarbon oil in the presence of hydrogen with a hydrocracking catalyst comprising a modified zeolite Y having a unit cell size in the range of from 24.20 to 24.65 .ANG. under operating conditions whereby at least 20% by weight of the hydrocarbons having a boiling point of 520 °C or higher present in the residual hydrocarbon oil is converted into hydrocarbons having a boiling point below 520 °C,
