Abstract of the Disclosure. In a process for cooling and cleaning hot gas containing ultrafine particles, such as from a coal gasification plant, producer gas produced in a melt-down gasifier or blast furnace gas from a melting reduction plant, in a packing prewasher and then in an annular clear- ance washer, in a saturation washing stage upstream of the packing prewasher the hot gas, accompanied by substantial use of its sensible heat, by the evaporation of the supplied hot water is at least appro- ximately enriched to its saturation limit by means of steam and consequently cooled and the dust particles are wetted and in the following cooling and washing stages dust separation is assisted by a rapid condensing out of the steam.
