ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the decomposition of diethyl- benzene monohydroperoxide, by which ethylphenol is obtained in good yields, comprises contacting a solution of 0.1 to 0.6 mole/liter diethylbenzene monohydroperoxide in diethyl- benzene with SO2 at a temperature of about 120° to 190°C for only the time period which is required for the decomposition of the peroxide, preferably for about 1 to 10 minutes.
