ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Halogenated species such as PCB dissolved in hydrocarbon- based electrical insulating oil are dehalogenated by contacting the oil with a fine dispersion of molten sodium particles of which at least 80% are below 10 microns particle size, at a temperature of 100 to 160°C. The process removes hazardous halogenated species and permits the oil, after water washing to remove sodium and solubles, drying and, if necessary, activated clay treatment, to be re-used as insulating oil.
