Abstract of the Disclosure It is known to reduce the sulfur content of char by treating the the coal from which the char is derived. Coal in a finely divided state is treated with a fluid to physically separate inorganic sulfur compounds, with hydrogen to leach out sulfur, or with molten alkali to leach out sulfur. The known treatment of coal is costly as extra processing is required, and does not remove sulfur to the desired sufficiently low levels. The present invention overcomes these draw backs by providing a process for reducing the sulfur content of char comprising the steps of: a) treating char in a basic molten bath comprising an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal salt of a hydroxylaryl, other than cresylic acid, or an alcohol; and b) substantially separating said char from said basic molten bath. . ,
