Described is a process for dicarboxylating dihydric phenols, notably those where the hydroxyl groups are in the para- or the ortho- position vis-à-vis one another. More particularly, the invention pertains to a process for preparing 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (2,5 DHTA). The invention consists in that dihydric phenol is contacted with carbon dioxide in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate, the reaction being carried out in the presence of an alkali metal formate, at a temperature above the formate's melting point. The invention has several advantages over the well-known Kolbe-Schmitt reaction and other known carboxylation reactions, such as a lower operating pressure, higher yields, and/or shorter reaction times.

On décrit un procédé de décarboxylation de phénols dihydriques, notamment ceux dans lesquels les groupes hydroxyles sont en position para ou ortho l'un par rapport à l'autre. Cette invention concerne plus particulièrement un procédé de préparation de l'acide 2,5-dihydroxytéréphtalique (2,5 DHTA), et elle consiste à mettre en contact du phénol dihydrique avec du dioxyde de carbone, en présence d'un carbonate de métal alcalin, cette réaction s'effectuant en présence d'un formiate de métal alcalin, à une température supérieure au point de fusion du formiate. Cette invention présente plusieurs avantages par rapport à la réaction bien connue de Kolbe-Schmitt ainsi que par rapport à d'autres réactions de carboxylation, tels qu'une pression de service inférieure, des rendements supérieurs et/ou des temps de réaction plus courts.
