L'invention concerne un procédé de teinture directe des fibres kératiniques, caractérisé par le fait qu'il consiste à mettre en contact des fibres kératiniques sur lesquelles on a appliqué une composition contenant au moins un colorant direct portant au moins une fonction sulfonique, avec un gaz contenant de la vapeur d'eau, la température dudit gaz étant supérieure à 75°C, le temps de contact entre ledit gaz et lesdites fibres à colorer étant inférieur à deux minutes. Ce procédé permet d'obtenir d'excellents résultats tinctoriaux en des temps extrêmement limités et sans risque de tachage de la peau ou du cuir chevelu
