ABSTRACT A process for drying to moisture contents below 20% and beneficiating pulp mill sludge or other fibrous material particularly from bleached kraft pulp mills which has adsorbed or physically adhering chlorinated organic substances, for example, polychlorinated dioxins and furans; such that after drying and beneficiation the sludge or fibrous material can be burnt in a lime kiln of the pulp mill, without suppressing the operating temperature of the calcining zone of the said kiln in order to (i) alleviate the sludge disposal problem, (ii) destroy the chlorinated organic substances, for example, polychlorinated dioxins and furans contained in the sludge and (iii) recover the energy value of the sludge.
