ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention relates to a process for the electrolysis of brine by mercury cathodes. The process comprises the steps of providing an electrolytic cell; dividing the cell into an anolyte compartment for the discharge of chlorine and a catholyte compartment by positioning a membrane in the cell; providing the membrane with pores impervious to the passage of mercury and electrolyte therethrough and pervious to passage of ions therethrough for preventing short circuits between anode and cathode poles of the cell; employing a film of mercury as the cathode; continuously flowing the film of mercury across the membrane; and using the film of mercury to continuously remove from the cell, as an amalgam, metal deposited therein.
