Tobacco is treated to cause its expansion by a process which comprises the steps of subjecting it, in a treatment chamber, to a reduced pressure of not greater than 7 kPa, impregnating the cell structure of the tobacco with isopentane vapour at a temperature in the range of from 70 °C to 100 °C and maintaining the tobacco in contact with the vapour at a pressure of at least 400 kPa, removing excess isopentane vapour from the treatment chamber, contacting the impregnated tobacco with steam to expand the tobacco cell structure, reducing the pressure in the treatment chamber at a rate of at least 10 kPa/minute, preferably 30 kPa/minute, and then venting the treatment chamber back to atmospheric pressure. The final filling value of the tobacco treated according to this process is directly proportional to the rate at which the pressure in the treatment chamber is reduced following the steam treatment of the tobacco.

On traite le tabac pour provoquer sa dilatation au moyen d'un procédé comprenant les étapes consistant à soumettre le tabac, dans une chambre de traitement, à une pression réduite inférieure ou égale à 7 kPa, à imprégner la structure cellulaire du tabac avec une vapeur d'isopentane à une température comprise entre 70 DEG C et 100 DEG C et à maintenir le tabac en contact avec la vapeur, à une pression d'au moins 400 kPa. Ce procédé consiste également à retirer l'excès de vapeur d'isopentane de la chambre de traitement, à placer le tabac imprégné de vapeur pour assurer sa dilatation cellulaire, à réduire la pression dans la chambre de traitement à raison d'au moins 10 kPa/minute, de préférence 30 kPa/minute, et ensuite à purger la chambre de traitement afin de lui restituer la pression atmosphérique. La valeur de remplissage finale du tabac traité selon ce procédé est directement proportionnelle à la vitesse à laquelle la pression dans la chambre de traitement est réduite après le traitement du tabac par la vapeur.
