There is described a process for preparing, extracting and purifying the polypeptide antibiotic epidermin. The process is characterized by its economy and relatively high epidermin yields. Epidermin is adsorbed from a culture of Staphylococcus epidermidis onto a styrene-divinyl copolymer resin, eluting it from the resin and applying it to a cation exchanger, eluting it from the cation exchanger onto a second styrene-divinyl copolymer resin and eluting epidermin from the second resin.
