Abstract An electrochemical process for forming uniform, bioactive composite coatings on porous and non-porous conductive substrates such as implantable devices is disclosed. Bioactive composite coatings obtained by the process of this invention consist of a crystalline oxide base layer and a bioactive calcium phosphate outer layer such as hydroxyapatite. Bioactive composite coatings obtained by this process are effective in minimizing metal-ion release from the substrate, as well as, improving the bioactivity of the implantable devices. The process of this invention allows the production of such coatings in a commercially viable manner.
