ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for forming a multilayer coated film by coating a multilayer coat-forming paint on the surface of a substrate. The multilayer coating achieves the dual function of primer and top-coat in a single coating and baking. Prior to the coating, the surface of the substrate is treated with a solution containing at least one onium compound of the formula: Image Image or . (I) (II) wherein Y represents a nitrogen, phosphorus or arsenic atom, R1, R2, R3 and R4 are identical or different and each represents a hydrogen atom or an organic group having not more than 8 carbon atoms, and X? represents an anion. The pretreatment promotes phase separation of the paint, increases the surface smoothness of the multilayer coating and also improves the properties of the coating.
