ABSTRACT A structural coating is formed on a vitreous, ceramic or porcelain substrate to protect and strength- en the substrate, by applying a coating material con- taining free isocyanate groups to the substrate and subjecting the thus-coated substrate to treatment with a drying agent at room temperature. The drying agent is in vapour-phase and is either (a) ammonia, an amine or an alkanolamine; or (b) a multi-component agent compris- ing (i) water and (ii) a further component selected from an amine, alkanolamine or other hydratable compound. The invention finds application in the structural re- inforcement, restoration and/or refurbishing of vitreous containers such as bottles of all configurations, types and sizes (for milk, soft drinks, and alcoholic or other beverages), drinking vessels, jars, vases - in fact, glass containers or glass surfaces of any kind and for any purpose. The invention is also appropriate for the structural strengthening of other materials such as porcelain and ceramic ware.
