ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention provides a process for the heat treatment of steel, wherein a rail is quenched entirely or in their head portion from a temperature which is in the austenite range in water at at least 80°C to at least a temperature at which pear- lite transformation is completed, the composition of the steel being such that a very fine pearlitic structure is obtained in the quenched steel.
