A process for continuously heating an asphalt surface comprising the steps of: (i) providing asphalt surface heating means an the asphalt surface; (ii) translating the heating means a first distance along the asphalt surface; (iii) reversing the direction of and translating the heating means a second distance along the asphalt surface in a direction substantially opposite to that in Step (ii); (iv) reversing the direction of and translating the heating means a first distance along the asphalt surface in a direction substantially the same as that in Step (ii); (v) repeating Steps (iii) and (iv) in a cyclic manner to provide a heated asphalt surface; wherein the ratio of the second distance to the first distance is in the range of from about 0.10 to about 0.90.
