PROCESS FOR HYDROTREATING RESIDUAL PETROLEUM OIL ABSTRACT A method for hydrotreating a residual oil comprises utilizing a hydrotreating catalyst which contains a thermally stable composition comprising a layered metal oxide containing interspathic polymeric oxide pillars and having a d-spacing of at least about 10 Angstroms. Hydrotreating is effected at a temperature of 357°C to 454°C (675°F to 850°F), a hydrogen partial pressure of at least about 2860 kPa (400 psig) and a liquid hourly space velocity of 0.1 and 10.
