ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Olefinically unsaturated compounds containing 4 to 36 carbon atoms and having boiling points above 40°C are converted into the corresponding vicinal diols by reaction with formic acid and hydrogen peroxide at elevated temperature while intimately mixing and by subsequent saponification of the diol formates initially formed. The formic acid is used in amounts of 2 to 6 moles per mole of double bond and hydrogen peroxide is used in a concentration of 35 to 98 percent by weight. The reaction is carried out a temperature between 40 to 80°C. The desired diols can usually be obtained in reaction times of less than seven hours and in yields of approximately 90%.
