ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Kraft or sulphate pulp is used in the unbleached state for the production of packaging material because of its good strength properties. However, the unbleached Kraft or sulphate pulp is not suitable for packaging material for food since it has an ugly brown colour and an unpleasant odor due to the decom- position process and the washing with condensates from evapora- tion. According to the invention, the Kraft or sulphate pulp may be brightend by approximately five points and deodorized by means of peroxide without reducing the strength. The treatment can be carried out in conventional plants for the production of pulp after diffusion washing in a thick-pulp tower. Hydrogen peroxide is preferably used as the peroxide.
