The polymerization of vinyl aromatic compounds during the distillation of the vinyl aromatic compounds is inhibited by adding to the vinyl aromatic compound, e.g., styrene, undergoing distillation a nitroso compound such as N-nitroso-N, N'-di-3-pentyl-p- phenylenediamine.
