An improved process and catalyst system for the isomerization of halothiophenes. More particularly, an improved process for the isomerization of 2-halothiophenes to 3-halothiopenes by reacting a w-halothiophene with a catalyst and in the presence of a base. The addition of a base additive to the acidic zeolite catalyst allows the desired isomerization to take place while suppressing side-reactions that result in the decomposition of the thiophene rings. The catalyst lifetime is thus increased and the amount of catalyst needed for the reaction is reduced, lowering cost.

L'invention concerne un procédé amélioré et un système catalyseur d'isomérisation des halothiophènes. L'invention concerne, plus particulièrement, un procédé amélioré d'isomérisation de 2-halothiophènes en 3-halothiophènes par mise en réaction d'un 2-halothiophène avec un catalyseur et en présence d'une base. L'addition d'un additif de base au catalyseur de zéolite acide permet d'obtenir la réaction d'isomérisation désirée tout en supprimant les réactions secondaires entraînant la décomposition des noyaux de thiophène. La durée de vie utile du catalyseur est ainsi augmentée et la quantité de catalyseur nécessaire pour la réaction est réduite, réduisant ainsi les coûts.
