A process for joining silicon-containing ceramic articles (12), and particularly ceramic articles (12) and CMC articles (12) that contain both silicon carbide and free silicon. The process entails providing a reactive metal-containing braze material (20) between the articles (12), and then heating the braze material (20) and the articles (12) to react the reactive metal with the silicon within the articles (12) to form a brazement (24) containing a silicide phase of the reactive metal. The brazement (24) and articles (12) are then cooled to produce a component (10) comprising the two articles (12) and the silicide phase-containing brazement (24). The process is preferably carried out at temperatures below that which would thermally degrade constituents of the articles (12), and more preferably below the melting point of silicon.
