ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved process for the liquefaction of a solid carbonaceous material wherein at least a portion of the heat required for liquefaction is provided by passing a slurry of the solid carbonaceous material through the convection section of a hybrid boiler and at least a portion of the heat required to effect the preheating is provided by combustion of a normally solids bottom product from the liquefaction in the combustion section of the hybrid boiler. In a preferred embodiment, another portion of the bottoms product will be gasified to produce process hydrogen and steam will also be produced in the hybrid boiler to be used to satisfy process steam requirements and to produce at least a portion of the electrical power required to operate the liquefaction process.
