PROCESS FOR MAKING 1,2-DICHLOROETHANE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The disclosure relates to a process for making 1,2-di- chloroethane by subjecting ethylene to oxychlorination with hydrogen chloride and oxygen or air at temperatures of 200 to 250°C, under pressures to 1.7 to 5 bars in the presence of a catalyst containing copper(II)chloride deposited on a carrier and, if desired with the addition of nitrogen, where- in 1,2-dichloroethane is removed from the reaction gas by con- densation and, in the event of oxygen having been used, the bulk of residual gases is recycled into the oxychlorination zone. More specifically, the ethylene is at least partially used in the form of ethylene-containing off-gases origina- ting from a catalytic process for making acetaldehyde from ethylene and oxygen.
