A method of preparing acrylic sulfonic acid polymers wherein a preformed amino methane sulfonic acid is not utilized, which comprises reacting a starting material selected from one member of a group consisting of acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers and which is substituted by a substituent of up to 20 percent of water-soluble hydroxy lower alkyl (C1-C4) and lower alkyl (C1-C4) esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids and soluble vinyl acetate substituents introduced into the acrylic and methacrylic acid polymers and converting a substantial amount of the carboxylic acid groups to amido methane sulfonic acid groups.
