ABSTRACT A process for the production of anhydrous bismuth trichloride which comprises the steps of establishing a molten bath of metallic bismuth and bismuth trichloride at a temperature below the boiling point of the trich- loride and introducing dry gaseous chlorine for reaction with the bismuth until all the bismuth has reacted therewith. This process has the advantages of simplicity and of providing an anhydrous product substantially free of BiOCl.
