Lactams, in particular .epsilon.-caprolactam, are produced by the hydrolytic cyclization of aminonitriles, in particular 6-aminocapronitrile, in the vapor phase in a plurality of adiabatic fixed bed reaction zones arranged in succession wherein at least a portion of the heat of the exothermic reaction is removed between each of the successive reaction zones. Conducting the reaction in such a manner requires less capital for the reactor itself. It has also been found that the product exiting such a reaction system can be directly fed to a distillation unit without the need of additional cooling or storing.

les lactams, singulièrement le e-caprolactam, sont obtenus par cyclisation hydrolytique d'aminonitriles, en particulier de 6-aminocapronitrile, dans la phase vapeur d'une pluralité de zones de réaction adiabatique à lit fixe, une partie au moins de la chaleur de la réaction exothermique étant évacuée entre chacune des zones de réaction successives. Dans les conditions susdécrites, la réaction exige moins de capital pour le réacteur lui-même. On a constaté par ailleurs que le produit ainsi fabriqué pouvait alimenter directement une unité de distillation sans refroidissement ou stockage supplémentaire.
