PROCESS FOR MAKING CHOLESTEROL LOWERING SAPONINS ABSTRACT Disclosed is a process for preparing novel compounds containing 5-C-hydroxymethylhexose and a sterol or triterpene. These materi- als, when consumed by humans and animals, lower the cholesterol level in the blood. The compositions are prepared by preparing and then reacting a fluoro or bromo hexaacylated 5-C-hydroxymethylhexose with a sterol. In a second method the hexaacylated 5-C- hydroxymethylhexose is reacted with a sterol in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethane sulfonate.
