A process is provided for the manufacture of morphine-6-glucuronide and related compounds of the general structure shown in Formula (1), wherein optionally substituted morphine is conjugated with an optionally substituted member of a new class of intermediates, namely 1-haloglucuronate esters, in the presence of iodine or an iodonium compound. This may be followed by a conversion of R1 (Formula (1)) into hydrogen and/or the removal of the ester groups from the glucuronic residue at R2 (Formula (1)).

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé de production de morphine-6-glucoronide et de composés apparentés ayant la structure générale représentée par la formule (1), où de la morphine éventuellement substituée est conjuguée à un élément éventuellement substitué d'une nouvelle classe d'intermédiaires, à savoir les esters de 1-haloglucoronate, en présence d'iode ou d'un composé d'iodonium. Cette opération peut être suivie par une conversion de R?1¿ (formule (1)) en hydrogène et/ou par le retrait des groupes esters du résidu glucoronique en R?2¿ (formule (1)).
