ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is described for removing trityl blocking groups from 5'-0 trityl nucleosides and oligo- nucleotides, this comprises contacting said nucleoside or oligonucleotide with a Lewis acid such as zinc bromide. The process is thus useful in synthetic processes for producing oligonucleotides and polynucleotides.
