ABSTRACT A process is disclosed for making steel wire products having a high carbon content. High carbon steel wire is heated at the vicinity of its junction with at least one similar wire placed across the former. The heat is maintained for a sufficient period of time to allow heat to disperse to adjacent wire areas but insufficient to cause wire fusion. The wires are welded and the heat subsequently is raised in a post weld heating step to a temperature in the upper critical range. The resulting wire screen subsequently is quenched.
