ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the accelerated manufacture if bitumens possessing an improved resistance to combustion comprises subjecting a heavy petroleum residue to a thermal blowing treatment at elevated temperature in the presence of air or oxygen and and from 0.1 to 10% wt of a halogenated organic compound selected from the compounds resulting from the Diels and Alder condensation of a hexahalocycpentadiene and a dienophilic compound.
