A B S T R A C T The invention relates to a process for manufacturing from alum- inum hydroxide crystalline alumina which after further conven- tional treatment is advantageously suitable for ceramic and refractory purposes or as a lapping and polishing agent. The process is such that aluminum hydroxide with a Na2O con- tent of ? 0.1 wt.% with respect to Al2O3 and having an addition of an ammonium containing mineraliser made to it - simultane- ously in the presence of boron and/or fluorine, in particular addition of NH4BF4 - is subjected either directly or after prior partial dehydration to a thermal treatment above the temperature for transformation to ?-Al2O3. The product is characterised by way of the essentially iso- metric shape of the single crystals. - 1548 - - 1 -
