ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Highly pure chlorine dioxide is generated very efficiently and safely in a single generator-crystallizer by reducing an alkali metal chlorate with chloride ion in a strong acidic reaction medium of sulfuric acid, hydro chloric acid or mixtures thereof in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and a complex catalyst comprising palladium (II) with chloride ion at a temperature of 25 to 90°C under a reduced pressure of 20 to 400 mmHg. This process is a safer and a more economical process than those of the prior art.
