ABSTRACT A process for the production from coal of needle coke suitable for use in the manufacture of large size artificial graphite electrodes, which comprises subjecting coal particles in a suitable solvent to hydrogenolysis to produce a substan- tially ashless coal solution, distilling the solution to provide at least one distillate fraction preferably boiling within the range of 250°C 'co 600°C and coking said distillate fraction.
