ABSTRACT A method of monitoring the ageing or wearing of a spliced endless member such as a belt is disclosed. The method involves applying to the spliced endless driving belt a pair of first markings the shortest path between which includes the splice of the endless drive belt and applying to the driving belt a pair of second markings the shortest path between which does not include the splice. During use of the belt the following two measurements are made simul- taneously, namely (1) the time taken for the first pair of markings to pass through a position in which they are sensed by a first element for sensing the presence of the first markings; and (2) the time taken for the second pair of markings to pass through a position in which they are sensed by a second element for sensing the presence of the second markings. By determining the relation between the two time values thus obtained and comparing this relation with a predetermined value the degree of slackness or wear can be determined.
