Abstract of the disclosure: Process for melting snow and/or ice using an alkali metal carboxylate A sodium acetate which is essentially anhydrous and has the form of particles having a smooth surface and a diameter of 0.3 to 10 mm is employed as de-icing agent in the process described. The sodium acetate described also meets above all the requirements for a rapid thawing action and for only slight, if any, cooling of the environment, whereby melting of ice and snow is accele- rated further.
