A B S T R A C T The surface (15) to be metallised is placed in an enclosure (7). A plasma is produced in a plasma tube (3) which extends into the enclosure (7), the plasma having a post-discharge zone in which the surface to be metallised is placed. Vapour of a carbonyl metal compound is injected into the enclosure (7), such compound dissociating in the post-discharge plasma to cause the metal to be deposited on the surface (15). (See Fig. 1)
