ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is provided for the reduction of the dark colouring of paper pulp in white water systems. The process involves adding oxygen, or oxygen-containing gases to the whitewater system of the pulping system. The oxygen is added in such an amount that aerobic conditions are maintained substantially permanently in at least a part of the whitewater system, and where the redox potential is higher than -100mV. This seems to prevent anaerobic bacteria from forming metal sulfides on the pulp.
