ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for modifying coal, particularly low lank coals such as brown coal is described, comprising, in one embodiment, healing the coal at a temperature of from 100 to 350C until the water content reaches substantially zero and, thereafter, oxidizing the above-heated coal, and in another embodiment, drying the coal until the water content reaches substantially zero, rapidly healing the thus-dried coal to a molding temperature, compression molding the thus-heated coal under elevated pressure, and then oxidizing the thus-molded coal. The process of the invention enables to achieve the dehydration of low lank coal and at the same time, to prevent the low lank coal from spontaneous ignition by a relatively simplified procedure.
