ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for treating a heteropolysaccharide formed by bacteria of the genus Xanthomonas to improve its filterability and to retain its viscosity imparting properties at a significant level which comprises obtaining an aqueous solution of said heteropolysaccharide containing at least 0.5 weight percent salt, heating said saline heteropolysaccharide solution at a temperature in excess of 100°C. until said heteropolysaccharide can be more readily separated from bacterial cells and other debris in said saline heteropolysaccharide solution and terminating said heating of said saline heteropolysaccharide solution before the viscosity imparting properties of said heteropolysaccharide are substantially e.imnated.
