ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The neutralisation of irritants and toxic gases, such as ammonia, smoke, fumes or carbon monoxide, is effect- ed by treating the contaminated articles or persons, or the contaminated atmosphere, with a solution which contains poly- vinylpyrrolidone. This solution is advantageously sprayed on or is distributed in the atmosphere in the form of a mist A preparation which is particularly suitable for use in this process contains, in an aqueous solution, at least 0.1% by weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone, with or without auxiliary or carrier substances. The active substance need not be applied in the form of a solution, but can also be used in the form of fine particles which are sprayed in solid form, for example into the atmosphere.
