A method for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from nickel and cobalt containing laterite ores, said method comprising: a) roasting feed ore in a reducing atmosphere in a rotary kiln to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt, wherein either no, or less than 2.5% w/w reductant is added to the feed ore prior to roasting; b) leaching the reduced ore with an aerated ammoniacal ammonium carbonate solution to extract the nickel and cobalt into a leach solution; and c) separating the leach solution from the ore tailings and recovering the nickel and cobalt by a process selected from ammoniacal solvent extraction, precipitation techniques or ion exchange.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de récupérer du nickel et du cobalt à partir de minerais de latérite contenant du nickel et du cobalt. Ledit procédé consiste: a) à griller un minerai d'alimentation dans une atmosphère de réduction dans un four tournant afin de réduire sélectivement le nickel et le cobalt, aucun agent réducteur n'étant ajouté ou moins de 2,5 % en poids d'agent réducteur étant ajouté au minerai d'alimentation avant le grillage; b) à lixivier le minerai réduit au moyen d'une solution de carbonate d'ammonium ammoniacal aéré afin d'extraire le nickel et le cobalt dans une solution lixiviante; et c) à séparer la solution lixiviante des résidus de minerai et à récupérer le nickel et le cobalt au moyen d'un processus sélectionné parmi des techniques d'extraction de solvant ammoniacal, de précipitation ou d'échange ionique.
