ABSTRACT A process for obtaining synthetic crude petroleum from a hydrocarbon charge, or a heavy fraction previously separated from said charge, by subjecting the charge to a thermal treatment; two mixtures being thus obtained, one containing the lower-molecular-weight hydrocarbons, the other the heavier hydrocarbons. The latter mixture is treated with a solvent to give a bituminous portion and an oily portion which forms at least part of the synthetic petroleum.
